Founder's notes:

As a political science major myself rather than a music major, I have been looking out for songs that talk about politics, history or sociology. This has taken me about three decades. Out of all the far too many vocalised songs about love and broken hearts, I can only dig up very limited ranges of vocalised songs with lyrics about broader socio-political issues.

Are there any more out there in other languages?

Teaching resource and database are planned for release in phases in June 2025.

We plan to carry out advanced narrative analysis on the song lyrics and compile descriptive summary for each song.

Closing date for song entries: 30 Jan 2025

Entry criteria for songs:

• Essentially, the problem implicated or explicitly described in the song should be a relatively real problem that listeners have experienced, witnessed, or heard about deeply, and can empathise. 

Quota:

• Maximum 2 songs per performer to ensure fairness of cultural representation and music industry market share, but exception can be made with valid justification. 

Objectives:

• to scientifically extract applicable educational resources for social science curriculum development of all levels of studies (Year 4 and above);

• to identify problems in a socially legitimate way for problem stakeholders to work further on.
